#YouthSpotlight: Carter H

We celebrated Carter’s birthday in the office in early April 2018!

Name: Carter H

Current Job: Intern with Enterprise for Youth

Favorite snack: Cheese. Especially gouda.

Favorite school subject or career interest?

Theater and acting have been passions of mine since 5th grade. That?s what I really want to get into.

Favorite play or musical that you have participated in?

The Hollow.

Favorite memory from the performance?

It was part of a thing called “Move About Theater,” so we were outside, and instead of the scenes changing there were different areas for different scenes. We were rehearsing outside, in public, and it was a murder mystery. I had the part where we were finding a body, and I was shouting ?Christow, Christow, are you alright??

Someone came running up to us from the sidewalk and said, ?Oh my god, do you need me to call an ambulance?? And we had to break character and say ?Oh no, it?s ok, it?s just a play, we?re acting!? It was very validating because apparently, we were that good!

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I will show up at 11 and receive my first assignment. Sometimes it?s paperwork, sometimes it?s moving things around, sometimes it?s cleaning, and then I?ll do that. If I finish that, I’ll then look for something else to do.

What has been your favorite task so far?

The paperwork, because it?s repetitive but in a way that it?s doable. There?s obvious steps that I?m able to follow.

What is the most important thing you?ve learned at your internship so far?

Don?t be afraid to ask questions and reach out to people, because most people want to help you.

Have you made a mistake? How did you deal with it?

Last Monday, I somehow forgot that 11:00 was the time I had to be here, not the time I had to leave [the house], so I ended up being 40 minutes late. I called while I was on the way to tell everyone that I?d be there late, but I?d be there. Telling everyone was a good decision on my part.

What was the highlight of your internship so far?

The people. Everyone is really nice here and supportive, and I can ask questions, and they answer them.

What are your plans for the future and how has Enterprise shaped these plans?

My plans for the future would be to hopefully get professional acting jobs. I?m here and able to do other things (school, acting) because of my job. Enterprise has shown me that I don?t have to do one or the other. I can have a job like this, and also be pursuing acting.

What is your dream career path?

My absolute dream would be to be able to support myself entirely by acting.

Did you ever have a plan B? Is there another career that you think about besides acting?

Not really, because until recently I thought I wanted to be a vet, and then I tried to go into school, taking science classes and math, and not theater, and I couldn?t handle it.

Any advice for other youth applying for internships or jobs?

Make sure they know you want to be there and put yourself out there, but also show who you are. If they?re not going to hire YOU, then they?re not going to keep you. Be yourself, but show enthusiasm for what you?re trying to do.
